Zensah Compression Socks:
I am a seasoned athlete who has done a number of Ironman and ½ IM races. Coming from a running background I stick to my roots by doing the Boston Marathon every year. However my passion now is Triathlon. I have noticed for the last couple of years more and more athletes (pros and age groupers) are wearing compression socks. For someone who still appreciates the Dave Scott/Mark Allen image of doing the marathon at Kona in running shorts, compression socks was an awful trend!
I moved up to a new age group this year and am determined to qualify for Kona. I am very fortunate that I have the full support of my wife and two children. They are committed and determined to get me to Kona at all costs.
For the last couple of months I have had some problems with my calves. On my long runs they would cramp and on at least two occasions I pulled a calve muscle and had to stop running for a few days.
Then three weeks ago my wife bought me a pair of Zensah Compression Socks, bright white socks. I pretended that I was grateful because there was no way I would wear them!
Well, for my next long run, I decided that no-one would see them anyway because I would wear long running tights and living in the Northeast, the Zensah Compression Socks may just help to keep me warm! After 10 minutes of running I was sold completely. My calves felt great, my stride was smooth and I was sure that my form did not deteriorate during the 90 minute run. The support the Zensah Compression Socks provided was unbelievable and my calves did not bother me at all. I was also pretty sure that I felt better than usual the next day and was ready to put in another day of quality training. Since that run, I have done several long, hard runs and I have not had any problems with my calves!
To be honest I still don’t like the look of long white socks while running (or biking) but I will definitely wear the Zensah Compression Socks on April 20, 2009 at the Boston Marathon as well at Ironman Lake Placid in July, Arizona Ironman in November (and at the World Championships in Kona on October 10, 2009! J). Hopefully the other athletes in my age group won’t discover these socks before race season starts!
Johan 50-54 age group.
